MRI Virtual Reality Simulation
December 2018 - ONGOING
Child Life Specialists at BC Children’s Hospital work with children and youth to help them understand what is happening to them and to prepare for non-sedated Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) with an MRI simulation. We are working with a multidisciplinary team to develop and evaluate a highly realistic virtual reality tool that replicates the MRI procedure and environment at BC Children’s Hospital. Accompanied by a virtual character, patients will be encouraged to pivot, rotate, and explore the room in which their MRI will take place. The virtual simulation will cover the same information and procedures as the real-world simulation carried out with Child Life Specialists. The tool aims to reduce the number of children who require sedation during magnetic resonance imaging.
